A Prairie Transplant’s (First) Conference 🌾

Autumn is writers’ conference season and, though lots of us have been left at heartbreak hotel thanks to the SiWC’s cancellation this year… I’m super pumped to check out a whole new ballroom full of nerds at this year’s Saskatchewan Writers’ Guild (SWG) AGM and conference!* ❤️🌾❤️

*I tried not to put an exclamation mark here, and failed. It is an AGM, after all.

Graphic for the SWG 2025 Conference and AGM, with the "Seeding" Logo (seedlings sprouting atop the word) and the slogan, "Prepare for possibilities. No soil required."

As we fall back** into conference season, we’re springing forward into a vernal metaphor. Sprouts away!

**Except not, because we don’t do daylight saving time here - yes, it’s as great as it sounds.

You know the crunch of leaves underfoot goes best with the smell of loose leaf ruled paper, basketball kit (‘cause nerds can be jocks, too) and stale teachers’ lounge coffee - and if your joints can’t handle the court any more, what better way to recapture that harvest-time feeling than two days of word nerd classes and open mics? 🏀📝🎤

As a new(ish) transplant to the Prairies, I can’t wait to see how SK writers work on words together (and over-eagerly search for grassland companions).

So, if you’re a writer with nothing to do on Conference Weekend this October - make like The Guess Who and try runnin’ back to Saskatoon! No soil required.
