(Half a) Story Hour - Episode 9
Episode 9, “Anne of Green Gables: We Start Chapter Three”
For real! We got there! It’s Marilla Cuthbert’s turn to be surprised, as her brother Matthew finally reaches Green Gables with the orphaned child who has mistakenly been sent to live with them - and we finally learn her name: the one and only Anne Shirley.
Tough stuff in this episode: death, orphan experience, historical erasure
⭐️ Bonus ⭐️
Vocabulary: waif of the world, revelation, quenched, poplar, luminous, wretchedly, roving, animation, deprecatingly, breach, reluctant, affair, faltered forth
(Inter)active reading: Visualise, make connections, predict
For teachers: We talk a lot about the importance of names today. Write a paragraph about your name, what you know about it and its history. If you need to, ask someone in your family tonight, or do some research. How about the name of your street? The name of your pet or your sibling? Your parent or guardian’s name, and their parents or guardians? What did you learn about all these names? ✏️
Discussion question: What might Anne Shirley think of the Mi’kmaq place names we learned about today thanks to Dr. Inglis? Would she like them better than the local place names she learns from Matthew on their buggy journey? 💬
Musical interlude: “Pianists” from Le Carnaval des animaux by Camille Saint-Saëns 🎹
Other Stuff…
Here is the list of Mi’kmaq Epekwitk (P.E.I.) place names we talk about in today’s episode - thank you so much to Dr. Inglis for this wonderful information! You can find this list posted here on Reg Porter’s Prince Edward Island Heritage Blog.
