(Half a) Story Hour - Episode 2

Title card for (Half a) Story Hour, Episode 2: a cartoon fox looks up at a podcasting microphone in front of a stack of books on a wooden desk; background: a wooden crate, a marquee letter "I," a small toadstool and black-and-white cat curtains.

Episode 2, “Anne of Green Gables: More of Chapter One”

In this episode, we continue reading Chapter One of Anne of Green Gables.  We start to learn about Avonlea through the eyes of Mrs. Rachel Lynde - a nosy neighbour if there ever was one - and explore the idea of a “homestead.”

Tough stuff in this episode: lack of representation, historical erasure

⭐️ Bonus ⭐️

Vocabulary: dint, Sewing Circle, Sunday school, Church Aid Society, Foreign Missions Auxiliary, cotton warp, run the gauntlet, myriad, placidly, sorrel mare, deftly, gable, bower, scant, homestead

(Inter)active reading suggestion: Visualise, make connections, ask questions

For teachers: Draw what you saw - draw a picture of anything you saw in your mind’s eye during today’s reading (stick figures are fine!). Challenge: can you draw a picture of Lynde’s Hollow, where Mrs. Rachel Lynde lives with her husband, or of Green Gables? 🎨

Discussion question: why might the story start so far “out” from its main character, Anne Shirley? 💬

Musical interlude: “Hens and Roosters” and “Wild Donkeys (Swift Animals)” from Le Carnaval des animaux by Camille Saint-Saëns, performed by the Seattle Youth Symphony
